Six suspects have been arrested for cable theft in Roodepoort.

It is understood the suspects were handcuffed by security on Tuesday following information from the community.

City of Johannesburg Environment Infrastructure Services MMC Michael Sun said the suspects told security they were contractors doing a job for City Power.

Sun said the suspects had dug a 10 meter trench to steal the copper cables.

“The suspects, that include four Zimbabweans and two South Africans, had already dug up trenches to access the cables along Cypress road, in Zonnehoewe. Upon interrogation the suspects failed to produce job cards nor City Power ID cards needed.  The suspects then attempted to bribe the security officers with about R5 000, which the security duly refused.

Sun said suspects have been charged with damage to and tampering with essential infrastructure, bribery, among other crimes.”

Sun has given City Power six months to reduce cable theft by at least 20%.
