JMPD Deploys 1,800 Officers to Joburg CBD to Deal with Lawlessness

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has deployed about 1,800 officers to the Johannesburg CBD to deal with lawlessness. 

The deployment is part of Operation Buya Mthetho which was launched on Wednesday at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown by newly appointed MMC for safety and security David Tembe while he was the JMPD Chief. 

Tembe was joined by Acting Chief of Police Angie Mokas. 

Buya Mthetho is a multidisciplinary project involving all City departments, entities and external stakeholders including police, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the Immigration Office among others.

Tembe said the intention of the campaign is to bring lawlessness in the City of Johannesburg to its knees.  

“Gone are the days when criminals ruled the city and intimidated our residents with total disregard for the law. We call upon all stakeholders to work with us to bring back the law. We are going to reclaim our city from lawlessness, illegal dumping, criminality and the high jacking of our buildings.”  

Tembe said the operation will entail block by block patrol, stop and search, visible policing and ongoing monitoring by undercover units.
