State Capture Report Puts Zuma at Centre of Rampant Corruption
The first part of the State Capture Report has revealed that former president Jacob Zuma, presided over “a scarcely believable picture of rampant corruption” at the country’s most critical state-owned entities under his leadership.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has received the first draft of the State Capture Commission report from Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo on Tuesday
The inquiry chaired by Zondo was established in 2018 to examine allegations of high-level graft during Zuma’s nine years in power from 2009.
The allegations levelled against Zuma in the report include that he allowed businessmen close to him brothers Atul, Ajay and Rajesh Gupta to capture the South African state at the expense of the people of South Africa.
According Zondo’s report, Zuma was accused of fleeing the State Capture Inquiry because he could not explain how Dudu Myeni was appointed and retained as South African Airways (SAA) board chair for five years.
Evidence shows how Myeni was appointed as SAA Chairperson in 2012 despite underperforming as a board member.
The report states that Zuma could not have justified his insistence that Myeni be retained at SAA, nor could he have credibly denied evidence by former ministers Pravin Gordhan and Nhlanhla Nene that he wanted her retained.
