The case against three man accused of trying to steal boxes of cigrarettes has been postponed for further investigations.

The suspects appeared in the Lenasia Magistrates Court on Friday on charges of armed robbery, possession of car breaking implements and malicious damage to property.

The trio aged 34, 44 and 50 were caught by community members after they broke into a taxi parked outside Tobacco Junction in Lenasia with the intention of stealing boxes of cigarettes.

They were found in possession of car breaking equipment and a toy gun.

The polices Dimakatso Sello said a preliminary investigation linked the three to an armed robbery earlier this month.

“A man riding a bicycle was robbed of R20 000 cash. The robbery which was caught on camera went viral on social media. The Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela thanked the community members for their brave act of catching the suspects and calling the police.”

The police have urged the public to be vigilant and not carry large sum of cash with them but rather do electronic payments where possible.
