SA Records Another 8,561 COVID-19 Infections, NICD Confirms Country is Entering Fourth Wave

South Africa has recorded another 8,561 new COVID-19 infections pushing the country’s known caseload since the start of the pandemic to more than 2,976,600 

This increase represents a 16.5% positivity rate.

Twenty-eight more people have also died in South Africa after contracting the coronavirus, pushing the national death toll to 89,871.

The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (72%), followed by Western Cape (7%). KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 6%.

Mpumalanga and North West each accounted for 4% while Limpopo 3%, Free State 2% and Eastern Cape 1% – The Northern Cape accounted for less than 1% of today’s new cases.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases’ (NICD)Professor Adrian Puren says the fight against COVID-19 is far from over.

“South Africa is entering into the fourth wave with seven provinces. Taking measures to reduce the spread of infections including getting a COVID-19 vaccine , the wearing of masks and ventialtion is the best way to slow the spread of infections.”

On the vaccination front, about 25,6 million jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far. 

The NICD says there has also been an increase of 135 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.
