Trio Handed Lengthy Jail Terms for Murders of Yunus & Ml Ahmed Kathrada

Three men found guilty for the murders of late anti-apartheid struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada’s relatives have received lengthy sentences for the crime. 

Kgotso Moeletsi, Adam Mohale and close relative Muhammad Satar appeared in the North West High Court last week. 

The trio were charged with the murders of 65-year-old Yunus Kathrada and his 28-year-old son Moulana Ahmed Kathrada during an apparent house robbery in the North West in November 2018. 

Yunus died on the scene while his son died in hospital.

News24 reports that National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Henry Mamothame said that Satar, who is a close family friend of the deceased, set in motion the plan to rob the family by providing inside information to a group of conspirators on when Ahmed would return from masjid on the day of the murders.  

“Moeketsi was handed down two life terms plus 10 years, 15 years and three years, which will run concurrently. Satar was sentenced to 15 years on each count of murder and 10 years for attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances. The sentences will run concurrently. Mohale was sentenced to 15 years on two counts of murder and the sentences will run concurrently.”

During sentencing, Yunus’s widow described the raw emotions of seeing her husband and son’s passing as a traumatic experience, changing her life for the worst.
