Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has announced that the local government elections will take place on the 1st of November.

Dlamini-Zuma was briefing the media on Wednesday following the Constitutional Court’s decision that the local government elections should go ahead this year

Dlamini-Zuma says the date will be proclaimed on 20 September after the voter’s registration weekend.

“Elections will be held on a Monday (first time – normally on a Wednesday) and the reason is because the IEC needs as much time within the given time period to (27 Oct – 1 Nov) to be able to run elections smoothly.”

Dlamini-Zuma says political parties will campaign within the COVID-19 restrictions.

“We are currently on Level 3 and as the numbers go down, the president will make a determination.”

Dlamini-Zuma says there will be discussions to determine if the 1st of November will be a public holiday.
