Huawei South Africa says it hopes to become the number 1 brand in the country with its suite of services including the launch of its new P series smartphones.

The Chinese company officially launched the P20, P20 Pro and P20 Lite at the Galleria in Johannesburg on Thursday just a week after the major launch in Paris.

The P20 has a 5.8in FHD+ LCD while the larger P20 Pro has a 6.1in FHD+ OLED screen and a 24-megapixel selfie camera.

Other features include a triple-lens Leica camera on the P20 Pro, 40MP, 8MP, & 20MP, artificial intelligence capabilities with Huawei’s Kirin 970 artificial intelligence chip, super-slow motion video recording at 960fps in 720p and extreme low-light functionality.

The P20 Pro also boasts 6GB of RAM, and a 4,000mAh battery.

One of the more talked about cosmetic features of the P20 series includes the notch at the top similar to Apple’s iPhone X.

Huawei Marketing Director Akram Mohammed says they were not trying to copy Apple.

“If you look at the notch design, we are giving you a full view display with more screen real estate and I think this is what Apple tried to achieve as well. But the key difference between that is out notch is much smaller considerably if you compared it to what Apple did.”

Mohammed says Huawei is also offering a VIP and warranty service on the new P Series.

“Within our service centre environment our consumer will able to have their products serviced within one hour…When it comes to the screen, we’ve decided to free screen replacement for the first year.”

The new smartphones are currently available at major operators at R 12,999 for the Huawei P20 and R15,499 for the Huawei P20 Pro.

The Huawei P Series is available in four colours, Twilight, Pink Gold, Midnight Blue, and Black.
