The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) says it has appointed an investigator to probe the alledged assault and manhandling of Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Chair Helen Zille by police officers in the Eastern Cape.

In a video which has since gone viral, Zille can be seen dragged out of the Fernwood Primary School voting station in Bethelsdorp by the police on Monday.

Zille has since opened a case of assault against the police after the incident.

In a tweet, IPID says it is alleged that Zille was talking to the voters and one person reported her to be campaigning.

“The presiding officer allegedly asked her to leave and she refused. It is alleged the police were called in and pushed her out of the voting station. It is further alleged that a person was taking a video of the incident when the police took his phone away. He too opened a case of theft against the police. IPID has taken over the two cases.”

IPID’s Grace Langa says their Eastern Cape office has received a complaint of assault and manhandling by police officers.
