[WATCH] Cele: “If Your Life is Under Threat as a Police, You Must Use Deadly Force”
Police Minister Bheki Cele has repeated his call for police officers to use deadly force when under attack from criminals.
Cele was addressing mourners at the funeral of colonel Beauty Marivate in Mpumalanga on Sunday.
Marivate was gunned down in December last year when she responded to a burglary at a local supermarket in the Elukwatini area in Mpumalanga.
Her husband was also wounded during the shootout, but survived the incident.
Eight suspects have been arrested for the murder
Cele said the Criminal Procedure Act states that the duty of a police officer is to protect the community.
“If your life in under threat as a police, you must use deadly force. Those are the words in the law. Deadly force is deadly, it can’t be deadly life.”
Cele said the killing of Marivate should evoke anger in all of us as a nation.
