“There is No Place for Criminals in Gauteng” – Makhura After Deadly Joburg Shootout

Gauteng Premier David Makhura said there is no place for criminals in the province after eight suspects were killed and eight others arrested after a shootout with police at The Hill, south of Johannesburg.

Police said a gang of about 25 gunmen from KwaZulu-Natal, Zimbabwe and Botswana were planning a cash-in-transit heist on Monday when they were intercepted. 

Police are now looking for the nine other gang members who got away during the chaotic shootout.

Makhura has commended law enforcement teams for working together which led to the arrest of the criminals. 

The premier also strongly condemned the two officers for working with criminals.

“We expect them to serve and protect communities from criminals. We are disappointed expect the law to take its cause. Those who engage in criminal activities must face the full might of the law.” 

Makhura said the provincial government has established a War Room on fighting crime as part of building safer communities.

“There is no place for criminals to hide in Gauteng. We call upon the people of Gauteng to join hands with the government in the fight against crime.” 

Makhura said the War Room on crime brings together all spheres of government including civil society, the private sector and critical stakeholders.
