Somali National Apologises on Behalf of Somalians for Gqeberha Violence
A Somali national has apologised for the recent violence in Gqeberha.
Durban Road in Korsten was the scene of violence and destruction on Wednesday with eight taxis set alight, along with another vehicle.
According to police reports, the violence erupted after alleged retaliation following a road accident involving a taxi and a vehicle believed to belong to a local businessman.
Shops were also vandalised with the violence spreading to Kwazakhele where several more stores were torched but no arrests have been made.
In a tweet, Hassan Abdullahi Aalim, the former president of the student Council at the University of Johannesburg has condemned the violence in Gqerbha.
“On behalf of the Somali community, we condemn all types of violence against the host nation & we sadly regret what has unfolded today in Port Elizabeth. We assure all citizens of South Africa that this is an isolated incident & we do embrace the spirit of Ubuntu.”
During a visit to Gqeberha on Thursday, Police Minister Bheki Cele said action would be taken against those responsible for the violence.
