The South African Health Products Authority (SAHPRA) says it has approved the use of the Pfizer vaccine for children 12 years and over.

This becomes the first vaccine against the virus approved for minors in the country.

SAHPRA on its website says Section 21 of the Medicines Act is a mechanism that enables emergency use access and also enables the organisation to authorise the use of medicine subject to certain conditions.

The two dose Pfizer vaccine has been shown to be highly effective in preventing severe illness and also preventing death from COVID 19.

In South Africa, 2,000 children between the ages of six months and 17 years old are part of the Sinovac vaccine global study that will include 14,000 children across the world.
