SA Weather Service Warns of Severe Thunderstorms & Flash Flooding Across Gauteng & Other Provinces
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms, large amounts of small hail including strong, damaging winds across various provinces.
The weather bureau says severe thundershowers are expected on the weekend over Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Free State and North West as well as the northern areas of KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern and Western Cape.
It also says there is a potential risk of flash-flooding especially in low-lying areas.
“The residents of informal settlements, especially those located along river basins, are advised to take care, as such dwellings could be exposed to flooding. Disaster Management practitioners are also advised that some communities could become displaced and would require emergency shelter.”
The Weather Service has advised motorists that driving conditions in some areas are likely to become dangerous due to poor visibility and slippery roads , adding that extra care should be taken when driving over bridges and low-water crossings known to be susceptible to flash-flooding.
