SA Sees a Spike in New COVID-19 Infections

South Africa is seeing an increase in the number of new COVID-19 infections in the country.

Another 887 more infections were picked up over the past day, pushing the country’s known caseload since the start of the pandemic to more than 2,929,000.

The increase represents a 2.8% positivity rate.

Ten more people have also died in South Africa after contracting the coronavirus, pushing the national death toll to 89,572.

The majority of new cases are from Gauteng (66%), followed by the Northern Cape at (12%). 

The Western Cape accounted for 6%, KwaZulu-Natal 5%, Mpumalanga 4%, North West 3%, Eastern Cape and Limpopo 2% and the Free State 4% of new cases. 

On the vaccination front, about 24.6 million jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far.
