Ramaphosa Receives Part 1 of State Capture Report which Deals with SAA, The New Age & SARS

President Cyril Ramaphosa has received the first draft of the State Capture Commission report from Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

Zondo handed over the first of three parts of the report on Tuesday showing findings from three years of testimony.

The Deputy Chief Justice said part one of the report includes volume one on South African Airways and its subsidiaries, volume two on The New Age and volume three on SARS and public procurement in South Africa.

Ramaphosa said the formal handover of the first part of the State Capture Report marks the beginning of the final phase of the Commission’s work, which will culminate with the submission of the remaining parts of the report by the 28th of February 2022.

“This is a defining moment in our country’s effort to definitively end the era of state capture and to restore the integrity, credibility and capability of our institutions.”

Ramaphosa said he will submit the full report to Parliament by the 30th of June with an indication of his intentions with regards to implementation of the Commission’s recommendations.

However, Ramaphosa said Government will not make pronouncements on the findings nor recommendations before having received all parts of the report and having duly considered them

The president said he will also make the report public and accessible to all South Africans.

“I have therefore decided to release to the public each part of the Commission’s report immediately after it is submitted to me.  The first part of the Commission Report will therefore be available on the Presidency website within the next few hours.”

Ramaphosa thanked Zondo for his work and said it is important also to recognise the contribution of the former Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela, whose initial investigation into allegations of state capture laid the foundation for the establishment of the Commission of Inquiry.
