New COVID-19 Infections in SA Spike to More than 3,200

South Africa has recorded another 3.220 COVID-19 infections pushing the country’s known caseload since the start of the pandemic to more than 2,958,500. 

This increase represents a 9.2% positivity rate.

Eight more people have also died in South Africa after contracting the coronavirus, pushing the national death toll to 89,791. 

The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (82%), followed by North West and Western Cape each accounting for 4%.

KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga each accounted for 3% while Limpopo accounted for 2% and Eastern Cape, Free State and Northern Cape each accounted for 1% of today’s new cases.

On the vaccination front, about 25,2 million jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far. 

Meanwhile,

 President Cyril Ramaphosa has met with the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) on Saturday.

This comes amid growing concerns over the recent spike in new infections in South Africa and the discovery of the Omicron variant.

The Presidency says “the outcomes of the NCCC meeting will be communicated in the coming days.”
