Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says Action SA leader Herman Mashaba contested the local government elections for personal gains and should not compare Action SA to the EFF.

Malema was briefing the media on Thursday on the party’s performance in the local government elections.

The red berets garnered 10.33% of the national vote gaining a total of about 878 seats.

However, it was newcomer Action SA led by Mashaba celebrating a strong showing, disrupting the current political landscape and announcing the party’s first ward victory in Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

Malema says Mashaba knows that he is “regional material.”

“All he wants is to be a mayor and then Makhosi from KZN forces him to go and contest in KZN, Ethekwini and Newcastle. The man didn’t want to go there, he wanted to go in Joburg and be a mayor, that’s what he wants.”

Malema says he is happy that the African National Congress’ (ANC) national share of votes dropped below 50%.

“What is more exciting, is that the ANC has gone below 50%. I am the happiest man because when we started this mission in 2013, we said that we are going to make sure that the ANC is out of power.”

Malema says nobody can impose himself or herself on the will of the people and that political parties must accept the election results and congratulate the people of South Africa for conducting peaceful elections and continuing to be exemplary in the continent of Africa.
