The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it has had discussions with a political party about the possiblility of nullifying the 2021 local government elections.

The IEC was briefing the media on Monday ahead of the closure of the polls in the hotly contested municipal elections.

The IEC announced that the voter turnout was just over 27% with concerns raised that the elections could see the lowest turnout in an election.

The IEC’s Glen Mashini says there was a question raised about nullifying the election.

“The party concerned has had amicable discussions with the commission and a separate media statement on a joint basis will be made to that effect.”

Mashini says the IEC has not received information with regards to Democratic Alliance Federal Chair Helen Zille allegedly being assaulted and manhandled by a police officer in the Eastern Cape.
