Lenasia South Residents Decide Take Pro-Active Approach to Curb Crime in the Suburb

As crime continues to plague communities across the country, the Lenasia South community have decided to take a pro-active approach to curb crime in the area. 

Crime has spiked in Lenasia South following the mushrooming of a number of illegal informal settlements which completely surround the suburb.

Concerned Residents and Business Against Crime held a meeting last week Friday to address the needs of the small community and keep people safe.

Last month police Minister Bheki Cele during a briefing in parliament about the latest crime stats said the second quarter crime statistics are “as alarming as the previous quarter’s figures”.

The statistics showed that all contact crimes like murder, rape and attempted murder have increased.

In order to keep crime under control in Lenasia South, the community agreed to the immediate creation of neighbourhood street security committees, bringing back neighbourhood patrols and setting up broader security blocks throughout Lenasia South’s Extension 1, 2 and 4. 

Residents were also urged to call 10111 if there was no response at the Lenasia Police Station and make use of the Namola App. 

“Residents to encourage additional patrols from their contracted security providers such as armed response companies. These companies need to increase their visibility and presence in the area.” 

Businesses were also requested to activate video surveillance cameras and close their shops at regular hours to prevent armed robberies at night.

Residents also said there was an urgent need for a rollout  of walkie-talkie system with business owners to ensure quick and efficient communications at minimal cost.
