JMPD Issues Stern Warning Against Discharging Fireworks on New Years Eve
The Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) has issued a stern warning to residents who intend to set off fireworks this new year’s eve.
With the easing of some level 1 restrictions and the lifting of the curfew by government, the JMPD has outlined plans to ensure that fireworks are used safely and do not contravene any laws.
The JMPD said the noise from certain fireworks is extremely loud and offenders can be arrested and will be charged for disturbance of the peace.
Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the JMPD and Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will be conducting operations regarding illegal use and selling of fireworks.
“Anyone who contravenes or fails to comply with any of the City of Johannesburg by-laws will be guilty of an offence and can be liable to conviction or a fine. There are fines in place to ensure that fireworks by-laws are adhered to.”
Minnaar said fireworks can be dangerous if they ignited by small children and hence there must be always has to be adult supervision.
Minnaar adds that fireworks also causes trauma to animals, which can result in injury to dogs when escaping from loud sounds.
