Health Dept Adjusts COVID-19 Deaths After Backlog
The Health Department has adjusted the COVID-19 deaths after ongoing audits by provinces across the country to address a backlog of Coronavirus mortality and new cases.
The department said while it has recorded 551 COVID-19 deaths on Thursday, only 45 have occurred in the past 48 hours.
It says provinces including the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal account for 476 historical combined deaths in patients with SARS-Cov-2 infection.
The total number people who died from COVID-19 now stands at 92,112.
Spokesperson Foster Mohale said the identification of the historic deaths is part of the process to align the provincial death line list with excess deaths.
“The provincial COVID-19 dashboards reflect COVID-19 deaths by date of death rather than by date reported, and provides the most accurate trends in deaths in patients with documented SARS-CoV-2 infection.”
At the same time, South Africa has also recorded 9,860 new COVID-19 infections taking the total to more than 3,504,500.
The recovery rate currently stands at 3,260,642 while 28.1 million vaccines have been administered so far.
