Experts Keeping a Close Watch Over COVID-19 Cases as Infections Spike in Gauteng
The number of new COVID-19 infections have spiked in South Africa with the country recording another 1,275 cases over the past day, pushing the country’s known caseload since the start of the pandemic to more than 2,950,000.
The new Coronavirus cases have pushed up the positivity rate to 3.6%.
Twenty-two more people have also died in South Africa after contracting the coronavirus, pushing the national death toll to 89,657
The majority of new cases are from Gauteng (80%), followed by the Western Cape at 5%.
KwaZulu-Natal and North West each accounted for 3% while the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga each accounted for 2% and Free State and Northern Cape each accounted for 1% of the new cases.
On the vaccination front, about 24.8 million jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far.
The health department says experts are keeping a close watch over the spike in COVID-19 cases, mostly among young people.
