Eskom Downgrades Load Shedding to Stage 3 from 9pm Thursday, Stage 2 to be Implemented Until Saturday

Eskom has announced that stage 4 load shedding will be downgraded to stage 3 from Thursday at 9pm, thereafter stage 2 load shedding will be implemented until 5am on Saturday.

The power utility says some generating units have returned to service over the past 24 hours which has eased constraints on the power grid.

Spokesperson Sikonthi Mantshantsha has requested the public to continue reducing the usage of electricity, and will communicate promptly should there be any significant changes to the power system.

“Over the past 24 hours a unit each at the Koeberg, Medupi, Kriel, Duvha, Kusile and Tutuka power stations returned to service, helping to ease the current capacity constraints. Unfortunately, during this time, a unit each at Majuba and Arnot power stations tripped while a single unit at Matla was forced to shut down.

Mantshantsha says the system is still vulnerable.

“While this allowed space to reduce the utilisation of emergency generation reserves, it is however, still insufficient to end the current loadshedding. The next two days will be used to further improve the emergency reserves in preparation for the week ahead.”

Eskom has apologised for the inconvenience caused to South Africans, particularly the education fraternity who is negatively affected by the load shedding while sitting for the matriculation exams.
