Eskom Connects Unit 4 of Kusile to Grid which is Expected to Ease Power Constraints

Eskom has announced that  Unit 4 of the Kusile Power Station Project has been connected to the national grid for the first time which is expected to ease some of the power constraints facing the country.

This synchronisation means four generating units of the power station are now connected to the grid, and will contribute an additional 800MW to the country’s power system once the unit is fully optimised. 

The power utility said the unit will supply electricity intermittently during the testing and optimisation phase over the next six months, before being handed over to the Generation division to officially be part of the commercial fleet. 

Eskom’s Sikonathi Mantshantsha said the connection of unit 4 of Kusile Power Station will further assist the power as it works tirelessly to address the supply capacity challenges.

“Since synchronization last week, the unit has performed to expectation, intermittently generating up to 330MW. The unit post synchronization commissioning activities, are well in progress, experiencing normal challenges as expected during this phase.” 

Mantshantsha said construction and commissioning activities on the remaining Kusile Units 5 and 6 continue to progress according to plan which when completed will produce a maximum 4 800MW.
