Duo Nabbed for Allegedly Smuggling Illicit Cigarettes Worth over R600 000
Two men have been arrested for possession and smuggling illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of more than R600 000 in Limpopo.
The duo were handcuffed on Wednesday after police received information from local farmers about two bakkies that were travelling from Musina transporting illicit cigarettes.
Police attempted to stop the two vehicles but they sped off at high speed.
The police’s Motlafela Mojapelo said with the assistance of the farmers, they managed to stop one vehicle that was fully loaded with illicit cigarettes and arrested a suspect.
“The other driver abandoned his vehicle that was also loaded with illicit cigarettes and fled into the nearby bushes on foot in an attempt to evade arrest. He was later found hiding in the bushes and he was arrested. The illicit cigarettes were found loaded in the two motor vehicles and were confiscated.”
Mojapelo said the suspects aged 35 and 41 are expected to appear before Senwabarwana Magistrates’ court soon for possession and smuggling of illicit cigarettes.
