COVID-19 Infections Soar to 11,535 Cases, While 44 More People have Died from the Virus

South Africa has recorded another 11,535 new COVID-19 infections pushing the country’s known caseload since the start of the pandemic to more than 2,988,100.

This increase represents a 22.4% positivity rate.

Forty-four more people have also died in South Africa after contracting the coronavirus, pushing the national death toll to 89,915. 

The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (72%), followed by Western Cape (6%) while KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 5%. Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West each accounted for 4% respectively.

The Free State and Eastern Cape each accounted for 2% and Northern Cape accounted for 1% of today’s new cases.

On the vaccination front, about 25,8 million jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far. 

The NICD says there has also been an increase of 274 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.
