Lenasia police have urged residents to be wary of criminals posing as police officers.

This comes after these so called bogus cops reportedly call victims of crime and inform them that they have recovered their motor vehicles, that were reported stolen or hijacked.

Lenasia police spokesperson Bafana Ndimande said these bogus cops further request payments to be deposited or transferred for the services of towing trucks.

“The South Africa Police Service (SAPS) use their own or contracted towing services when the stolen or hijacked motor vehicles are recovered. The recovered motor vehicles are therefore transported to the SAPS Vehicle Impound (SAPS 13 Camp) without any fees charged to the victims of crime.”

Ndimande has urged the the public to report any suspicious activity to police.

Meanwhile, two criminals have robbed a business in Gemsboks Avenue in Lenasia.

It is understood the two armed suspects entered the shop demanding cash and cellphones.

Ndimande said the duo also stole cash and other items to an undisclosed amount of money.

“They left the shop and drove away in a getaway motor vehicle, a White Nissan Sedan with registration number HW93RNGP. There were no shots fired and no injuries sustained. The police are investigating a case of business robbery.”

Ndimande has appealed to the community to assist police with information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
