Body of Man Retrieved from Roodeplat River After Car Swept Away by Stormwater
Tshwane Emergency Services have retrieved the body of a man and the car he was driving from a river in Roodeplat.
it is understood the vehicle was swept away by stormwater on Saturday while he attempting to cross a low-lying bridge.
On Friday, the South African Weather Service (SAW) warned of severe weather conditions this weekend including torrential rain, potential risks of localised flooding and warning motorist to take extra care when driving over bridges and low-water crossings known to be susceptible to flash-flooding.
Tshwane Emergency Services Charles Mabaso said officials were called to the scene where they found the vehicle submerged in water but had to suspend the search on Saturday night because the water level had risen too high and it was very dark.
“The rescue resumed on Sunday morning. The man was brought to the shore together with the vehicle that was swept away.”
Mabaso has urged people not to cross flooded rivers or any low water bridges when it is flooding.
