Amnesty International South Africa has called on authorities to be transparent about the spate of kidnappings in the country and bring those involved to justice.

The organisation says the increasing reports of children being kidnapped is disturbing and authorities need to be transparent about all kidnapping cases.

This comes after an 11 year old Grade 5 girl learner was kidapped at E. P. Baumann Primary School in Mayfair on Wednesday by three suspects with AK47’s in a Silver/White Toyota Yaris.

The kidnapping of the girl comes a week after the four Moti brothers were returned to their family.

Amnesty International South Africa Executive Director Shenilla Mohamed said it is extremely disturbing that children are targets.

“It is important for authorities to be open and transparent about the issue and about who they believe are behind this spate of abductions and what they are doing to prevent further kidnappings. We understand that authorities cannot give details while they are tracking the perpetrators, but they can reveal the truth in bringing forth justice.”

Mohamed said the people of South Africa “have a right to know what is going on.”
