Global music streaming service Spotify has officially gone live in South Africa.
Spotify’s website went live on Monday afternoon, offering a free 30-day trial to its Premium service, which costs R59.99/month after the trial period ends.
The Swedish company, launched in 2008 and is available in more than 60 countries.
With over 159 million active users, including over 71 million Spotify Premium subscribers, Spotify is the world’s largest global music streaming subscription service.
Spotify says it paid R8 Billion in licensing South African music.
Speaking during the official launch on Tuesday, Michael Krause, Spotify MD says South Africa has always been a target market for the company.
“ We have had the continent in our sights for a while and are finally able to offer South African fans access to all the music they already love on Spotify, while helping them to enjoy, discover and share new music from both local and international artists simply and easily.”
Spotify says while there is currently no family plan yet, the service will launch in the future.
South African users have instant access to a wide range of local playlists expertly curated and regularly updated by our team of music experts, including Hip Hop Juice, Top Hits South Africa, House Nation, iGqom Le and SA Gold, alongside millions of Spotify and fan-built international playlists.
Spotify is available on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Microsoft Store. It also works on Xbox and PlayStation consoles, TVs, and smart speakers.
The South Africa launch comes as Spotify prepares for a direct listing for its shares on the New York Stock Exchange, which will let investors and employees sell shares without the company raising new capital or hiring Wall Street banks to underwrite the issue.
