Crime and social cohesion activist Yusuf Abramjee said the recent crime statistics show that South Africa has a crisis on its hands.

Abramjee was responding to the latest quarterly crime statistics covering the three months from October to 31 December last year.

Police Minister Bheki Cele and senior police management on Friday briefed Parliament’s police oversight committee about the latest stats.

Major General Thulare Sekhukhune said there were 6 859 murders in the third quarter, 562 more than in the same period the last year which tantamount to an increase of 8.9%.

Attempted murders also increased by 3.5%.

Abramjee said the numbers again show the country has an emergency.

“Government needs to act once and for all. When will this lawlessness end? We need action and real action now. We need real action!”

The crime statistics also show that sexual offences decreased by 9%, compared to the same quarter the previous year.
