Durban Couple Sentenced to Ten Years in Jail for Scamming South Africans with Elaborate Holiday Packages

A Durban couple who scammed South Africans out of their hard-earned cash with local and international holiday packages have been sentenced to ten years in jail.

The couple, 38-year-old Megasen Roland Chetty and 47-year-old Sarasvathi Belinda Pillay appeared before the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with eighteen counts of fraud.

Chetty and Pillay targeted people from Chatsworth, Phoenix, Malvern, Town Hill, Tongaat and other areas with their elaborate holidays deals.

The police’s Nqobile Gwala said: “Chetty and Pillay defrauded people from February 2018 until October 2019 of their money to a total of more than R1.2 million promising them to secure discounted holidays locally and abroad.”
