SARS Seizes Catalytic Converters Destined for Dubai, UK & Jordan Valued at R21-million at OR Tambo International Airport
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has seized catalytic converters and crushed powder from the core of a catalytic converter valued at R21-million at the OR Tambo International Airport destined for Dubai, the United Kingdom and Jordan.
It is understood, the customs dog detector unit intercepted the three shipments on Tuesday which were concealed in metal drums and bags and declared as Ceramic Catalyst Sample.
The crushed powder and metals contained in catalytic converters such as palladium, rhodium, platinum and gold extracted from the core of a catalytic converter is contributing to a new drug craze and can also be used for the manufacture of jewellery, car parts including weapons.
SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter praised the Customs officials of the dog detector unit for their vigilance in preventing the illegal trade in substances which could be used in the manufacture of weaponry and drugs.
“The seizures are evidence of the dedication and commitment of the SARS Customs officials to stamp out the trade in illegal and harmful substances.”
The consignment has been handed over to Hawks for further investigation
