Following the heavy rains across South Africa, residents from Lenasia and surrounds have been urged to visit the Avalon Cemetery to maintain some of the gravesites.

While the rain has been a welcome relief to replenish various dams across South Africa, the heavy downpours have also caused some damage to graves and soil erosion at the Avalon Cemetery in Lenasia.

On a recent trip to the cemetery, there were many graves that had sunk in and had overgrown weeds and required urgent attention.

In order maintain the cemetery, the Lenasia Avalon Cemetery Cleanup Group is embarking on a campaign to maintain the graves that have been affected by the downpours.

YAB Advisory Services Yusuf Ahmed Bulbulia said there is a lot work that needs to be done at the cemetery and has requested Johannesburg City Parks to cut the grass before the cleanup campaign.

“Further to the filling of the graves in mid-December 2021, unfortunately there is lots of work still to be done at the Cemetery. The next cleanup of the Cemetery will be on the 13 February 2022 tentatively.”
