A 54-year-old man who has been on the run since 2012 has been arrested in Wilderness near George in connection with the theft of Kruger Rands worth an estimated R7.8 million.

The man was handcuffed on Thursday after police acted on information from a warrant for his arrest by the Knysna Magistrates’ Court in connection with the theft that allegedly took place between May 2011 and 09 March 2012.

The police’s Malcolm Pojie said the suspect is expected to appear in the Knysna Magistrates Court on Friday on a charge of theft.

“At the time the suspect was working at a bank in Knysna and offer to safeguard the Kruger Rands. When she asked for the return of the commodity, he refused to give it back. Subsequent to his refusal and the disappearance of the Kruger Rands, the complainant laid a criminal complaint of theft against him.”
