Tech giant Google is celebrating its 20th birthday with a new Google Doodle marking the special occasion.

Google started out as a simple search engine in 1998 and has turned into one of the most important and influential companies in the world.

The search engine was created for about $100,000 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, two Stanford PhD students, who wanted to challenge Altavista and Yahoo, the two most popular search engines in the earlier days of the internet.

World Wide Worx Arthur Goldstuck says Google has changed the way people search for information.

“Google has changed the world, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst, but its mission of making the worlds information available to everyone is one that it has achieved better than anybody else in history. So in that sense bringing information to the world, Google has been truly transformative of civilization.”

Two of the most successful Google brands, besides its search engine and Gmail, are probably the video platform YouTube and an Android operating system.
