3.5 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Parts of Joburg

The Council for Geoscience has confirmed that a 3.5 magnitude earthquake has rattled parts of Johannesburg.

The quake struck on Tuesday morning just after 6:30am.

The council said the epicentre was located in Westonaria, approximately 51km south west of Johannesburg. 

The Council for Geoscience’s Eldridge Kgaswane said latest earthquake was liked related to nearby mining activity.

“If we get earthquakes beyond a local magnitude scale of 4 that should be a cause for concern because according to our standards you’re actually starting to go into huge magnitude scales.”
