City Power said a number of people have been arrested in several areas in connection with copper cable theft and vandalism.

The power utility said two criminals were also found guilty for damage and theft of essential infrastructure crimes at Booysens magistrate court and sentenced to 8 years in jail.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said City Power is in partnership with communities in the fight against copper cable theft and vandalism.

“City Power is responding positively to the call by Environment Infrastructure Services Department MMC for the reduction in copper cable theft and vandalism by 20% in the next six months.”

Mangena said partnership with communities, sector policing forums, the security industry and law enforcement agencies is the only sustainable solution to protect electricity network infrastructure.
