A 36-year-old man arrested for attacking the Constitutional Court with a hammer will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 25 March.

Paul Makaula who is also a convicted murderer appeared at the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court on Friday  facing a charge of malicious injury to property.

Makaula was handcuffed on Wednesday for allegedly smashing the windows of the Constitutional Court building.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Phindi Mjonondwane said the investigation process is at an early stage and more charges are likely to be added.

“Investigations conducted by Lieutenant Colonel Ingrid Simons revealed that Makaula is a parolee, serving the remainder of the 15 years sentence imposed in 2010 for murder and this information will be forwarded to the Department of Correctional Services for further processing.”

Mjonondwane said the NPA views the attack on the National Key Points as a direct attack on the rule of law and will prosecute anyone that poses a threat to any institution.
