Ramaphosa Confirms Suspect Being Questioned in Connection With Parliament Fire

President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the fire at parliament that broke out early Sunday morning.

Ramaphosa flanked by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and Public Works Minister Patricia De Lille were at Parliament on Sunday to inspect the damages caused by the blaze.

The president told reporters an arrest had been made.

“Someone has been held right now and is being questioned.”

Ramaphosa said government is thankful the offices have not burned to the ground.

“Everyone acted with speed and we are thankful that everyone mobilised. The praise must go to the firefighters of the City of Cape Town. They intervened at the right time. Their appearance has saved a very important national key point.”

Police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo said the 51-year-old male has been taken in for questioning.
