South Africa has recorded another 9,020 new COVID-19 infections.

This pushes the country’s known caseload since the start of the pandemic to more than 3,433,500.

This increase represents a 26 % positivity rate.

Eighty-one more people have also died in South Africa after contracting the coronavirus, pushing the national death toll to 90,935.

So far 3,145,543 people have recovered.

On the vaccination front, about 27.8 million jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far.

The NICD says there has also been an increase of 458 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.

At the same time, the Health Department has backtracked on its decision to scrap contact tracing and quarantine protocols after receiving backlash.

Earlier this month, the department announced that all COVID-19 contact tracing would be stopped with immediate effect and would no longer impose restrictions on asymptomatic carriers of the coronavirus.
