Wanted Portuguese Fraudster Arrested in SA after Escaping Portugal

Interpol’s National Crime Bureau (NCB) has arrested a convicted fraudster wanted by the Portuguese Government in Umhlanga Rocks, north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Portuguese national and banker Joao Manuel de Oliveira Rendeiro absconded from Portugal after being convicted on a multi-million dollar fraud case.

He was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment before he escaped that country

According to Observador in Portugal, the case relates to his tenure at the Banco Privado Português. 

The Head of the Judicial Police of Portugal, Luis Neves informed Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole during a bilateral meeting at the 89th Interpol General Assembly in Istanbul, Turkey that Rendeiro may be hiding in South Africa.

The police’s Vish Naidoo said Sitole committed to tracking down the fugitive.

“Members from the Interpol NCB in Pretoria, acting on an Interpol Red Notice, traced the fugitive to a location in Umhlanga Rocks where he was arrested at 7am this morning The fugitive will appear for the first time in the Durban Magistrates Court on Monday as part of his extradition process.”

Naidoo says the Portuguese authorities welcomed the news of Rendeiro’s arrest.
