The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Mpho Phalatse has been elected as the new mayor of the city of Johannesburg.

Phalatse was elected in the hotly contested metro on Monday, beating the African National Congress’ (ANC) Mpho Moerane.

Only two candidates were contesting the metro after ActionSA’s Herman Mashaba withdrew from the race.

Moerane congratulated Phalatse on her election as mayor of the city of Johannesburg.

“Congratulations to the newly elected Executive Mayor of the city of Johannesburg Councillor Mpho Phalatse As we the ANC in Johannesburg join the opposition benches, we are committed to work alongside the incoming Executives, to continue serving the residents of Johannesburg.”

The DA’s Vasco da Gama is the new speaker of the City of Johannesburg with 147 votes cast in his favour.
