[LISTEN] Arab Coalition Forces Turki Al-Maliki Unpacks the Peace Initiatives in Yemen

The official spokesperson of the Arab Coalition forces Brigadier  General Turki Al-Maliki says it is the responsibility of the international community to work the with special envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg, to bring the Houthi militia to the negotiating table for a long lasting solution to the conflict in Yemen. 

Al-Maliki was speaking during a workshop about the “Peace Initiatives in Yemen” on Monday. 

Seven years have passed since Houthi rebels seized the Yemeni capital Sanaa in September 2014, sparking a war that has plunged the already impoverished country into the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Despite diplomatic efforts to stop the fighting between the Iran-allied rebels and Saudi-backed government, there is no end in sight to a conflict that has put millions on the brink of famine.

Al Maliki says there has to be a sustainable solution to the Yemeni crisis. 

“If Yemen came safe and secure, stable, the whole region will be secure and also the international security will be achieved in this matter.”  

Al Maliki says the military objective of Decisive Storm is to protect the Yemeni people in the cities and villages and also to restore the legitimate Yemeni government which is recognised by the international community and also to end the coup. 

“The war in Yemen did not start in March 2015, it started when the Houthi in a coup against the Yemeni government. During that time, the coalition have set five times seize fire in Yemen upon the request from the United Nations and also to give the humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.” 

Al Maliki says a political solution is the best means to resolve the conflict in Yemen.
