South Africa has been removed from removed from the UK travel red list, along with 46 other countries.

The list required travellers to quarantine in an approved hotel at their cost for 10 full days

The move comes after months of anger and frustration by the South African government and tourism bodies about the negative impact the travel restrictions were having on the South African economy.

In a tweet, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the changes begins on Monday and “mark the next step” in opening travel.

Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Haiti and the Dominican Republic remain on the red list.

From 11 October, the UK will also recognise South Africa’s vaccine certificates which are available for download to fully vaccinated South Africans from the Health Department’s website.
