Rand Water says it has lost 60% of its production capacity at the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Works due to a power interruption which has affected water supply to a number of municipalities.

In a statement, the utility says Eskom’s Snowden high voltage Sub-station was affected by a veld fire on Sunday which has affected water supply services.

Rand Water says Eskom is currently working on restoring power, but cannot provide an estimated return to service.

It says water supply will be severely reduced as a result of this power loss.

“This power loss is affecting four of our major systems i.e. Eikenhof, Mapleton, Zwartkopjes and Palmiet. Water supply to municipal customers in City of Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg Water, City of Tshwane, Mogale City Local Municipality, Rustenburg Local Municipality and Westrand Local Municipality.”

Rand Water has urged consumers to conserve water until the Eskom crisis is resolved.
