The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) says Moegamat ‘Boeta’ Cassiem’s memory will forever be etched into the history of Newlands Cricket ground.

Cassiem sadly passed away on Thursday morning after a long illness.

Affectionately known by all, Cassiem, worked at Six Gun Grill Newlands for over 55 years and was a favourite with fans and players.

A few months ago, a ceremony was held at Six Gun Grill Newlands to honour Cassiem’s service to the stadium and supporters which have been a huge part of, not only his, but his family’s life for over half a century, with a permanent plaque unveiled in the Oaks Grass Embankment in his honour.

WPCA CEO Michael Canterbury who led the tributes says Cassiem was adored by fans and players.

“His infectious personality resonated with locals as well as international supporters and his passing will leave a huge hole in the overall match-day experience. Our sincere condolences to the family at this very sad time.”

WP Acting Head Coach Faiek Davids says Cassiem was the best brand ambassador Newlands has had or will ever have.

“On behalf of all the players and team management, thank you to Mr Cassiem’s family for sharing their father and grandfather with us for so many years and we wish them love and strength during this time.”

The Six Gun Grill WP and Gbets Rocks teams stood for a minute’s silence before Thursday’s T20 practice match between the two sides at Six Gun Grill Newlands.
