The Correctional Services Department has confirmed that former President Jacob Zuma has been placed on medical parole.

Zuma was admitted to a hospital outside the Estcourt Correctional Centre where he has been serving his 15 month jail term in KwaZulu Natal.

In a statement, the Correctional Services Department says it granted Zuma the medical parole after receiving a medical report.

“Medical parole placement for Mr Zuma means that he will complete the remainder of the sentence in the system of community corrections whereby he must comply with the specific set of conditions and will be subject to supervision until his sentence expires.”

The Correctional Services Department has appealed to South Africans to afford Zuma dignity as he continues to receive medical treatment.

In June, the Constitutional Court found the 79 year old Zuma guilty of contempt of court over his refusal to co-operate with the state capture enquiry that he set up.

The convicted criminal was escorted by convoy from his Nkandla homestead to the Estcourt jail.
