SA Records Another 2,828 New COVID-19 Infections

South Africa has recorded another 2,828 COVID-19 infections pushing the country’s known caseload since the start of the pandemic to more than 2,955,300.

This increase represents a 9.1% positivity rate.

Twelve people have also died in South Africa after contracting the coronavirus, pushing the national death toll to 89,783. 

The majority of new cases are from Gauteng with (77%), followed by Western Cape accounting for 5%. KwaZulu-Natal and North West each accounted for 4%.

Limpopo and Mpumalanga each accounted for 3% while Free state accounted for 2%; and Eastern Cape and Northern Cape each accounted for 1% of today’s new cases.

On the vaccination front, about 25,1 million jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far. 

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa will meet with the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) on Sunday to assess developments in the COVID-19 pandemic.

This comes after the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Thursday confirmed that 22 cases of a new variant of the Coronavirus B.1.1.529 had been detected in South Africa, Botswana and Hong Kong.
